21 April 2009. Recently hackers got into the Pentagon through connection to the Northrop & Lockheed networks. The hackers originated from China. The Chinese, of course, “opposes and forbids all forms of cyber crimes.”

They stole some data related to the $300 billion dollar Joint Strike Fighter project.

Maybe its time to tight the security between military and civilian enclaves. Just an idea. Realistically companies that have that much involvement in projects like this should actually have the same level of security as the Pentagon. Otherwise all the Pentagon’s security is useless due to the Northop/Lockheed backdoor.

One of my readers sent this too me a while ago. You must be extra, extra cautious when dealing with ANYONE on the Internet. One of my favorite Ronald Regan saying is “Trust but verify.” Well on the Internet you must not trust.. only verify and verify again. Since the DOD has made the password requirement impossible, I’ve been coming up with complex password methods that are easy to remember.

Here is one:

Passwords based on three digit primes on small areas of the keyboard.

135 – prime three digits

!#% – special characters of the prime

QET – cap letters under the prime (to left)

wrr – lower letters under the prime (right)

You choose a row of prime numbers. Then you base all the other digits on that prime.

So apparently, part of the U.S. critical infrastructure has already been exploited. It doesn’t surprise me. Its all fun and games with developers, engineers and scientists until their ass is getting hacked. They resist. They say “who the hell would hack this system” “HOW the hell would they hack it”. They cut corners and make excuses. Then, when the system is hacked, they blame it on the rain. The good news is that they know its been infiltrated.

I wonder why they didn’t design it as a closed network. Make all critical functions completely inaccessible to the outside world. It’s got me wondering if they even used an Information Assurance standard.

Netbooks are a another thing I’ve been tempted to add to my collection of things I do not need. Not including my two work laptops, I own 4 computers. So why in the world would I get a “netbook”?!

I could use is as a mobile wi-fi box that I keep in my car for emergencies, but that is what my HTC is for. The bottom line is that I just don’t need it. It would make a cool little hack box to mess around with. I could make it do nothing but look for WIFI points and continuously scan for viruses and exploited systems. That would kind of cool. Its so mobile that it could make a pretty decent War Drive device (if you were into that sort of thing). I imagine they’ll be some at Defon 17 War Drive contest.

I’m so obsessed with hard drive size that the netbooks puny 4-8 gigs kind of push me away.

I’ve been thinking of going to Defcon17 this year, but I’m reluctant because I keep remembering how lonely I was the last time I went Defcon14. There I was at the MECCA of all things security basking in the glow of technological brilliance and completely alone.

Everyone seems to have a crew there. All loners I meet are to paranoid to talk to anyone. So I end up going from lecture to lecture alone. Don’t get me wrong. I like learning new things.. But too often I feel like it was something I could have just watched on TV (if it was on TV). I want to get more involved, but I don’t have skills or the time to dedicate to another mega hobby like Hacking.

So I thought about rolling out with DC719 (my local defcon group), but I’ve yet to find them. dc719.org seems to have not paid their bill or something. I heard they are all crazy gun nuts, which I think is pretty awesome. Guns and hacking seems like my kind of crowd. Strange, huh?
