  • Nigerian Romance Scam

I was contacted through Tango Wire dating site. He immediately gave me his email address. The person called himself Philip Bingham email address lachlom06@yahoo.com . I will cut and paste the first two or three emails so you get the picture. He eventually, after about 5 or 6 emails wanted money. I figured out it was a scam early on and played with it for a while. I erased all of the emails and decided that I should report him somewhere so I created two other email addresses and contacted him. He sent a photo of a tall white blond haired male around 50 -55 years old. I will now cut and paste the first couple emails which gives you name and phone number.
One: Thanks for writing me back – you really have no idea how happy i am to receive an email from a Good looking woman like yourself. Am speechless .. I have attached some photos for you. Honestly when i first saw your picture i was intrigued!. You’re a good looking woman and i really admire that very much. First you have to understand that all that glitters aren’t Gold but when i see a pure diamond i won’t hesitate to jump on it.

I am a Architect that has been looked upon as a leader in the industry. I have been involved in various projects from overseeing construction of commercial buildings to working on government projects local and overseas. I have worked both for myself as a consultant and as a direct employee.

I haven’t been to La Jolla in CA before ..From the way you speak of it already am thinking life there will be very interesting and fun too! – I do like animals very much , I use to have a German shepherd.

Presently I am planning a trip to Central West Africa to check on the ( Casino / Hotel & Resort Project ) That am handling over there. Well it’s been quite an experience working overseas off & on. Perhaps you can reach me on my land line so we can talk a bit – Normally am not much of the phone buddy but for a good looking woman like yourself , I would enjoy having a conversation with you. # 718-285-8982

Let me begin by saying I am a widower and have been for 7 years now.. It was very sudden and I have taken time out to rediscover myself again. I have just started back into the dating scene this last few years. I enjoy a good conversation. I really don’t think distance is a negative factor for a lasting relationship – Understanding and Clicking matters a lot. Do you honestly think we can make magic? Am in search of an Ideal Woman!! Someone to share my passion and love with.

I am both American & Swedish. My father was American but my mother was born in Sweden. I recently moved to the States after so many years of living in Europe and it feels good to be home.

You have my Attention! Your turn to tell me more about yourself !

    Philip.

Two: Nice hearing back from you so soon , I live very in the City , China Town area , I love the restaurants so much , I have been living here in New York for about 8 months now. I have a beautiful new apartment that is very nice. I want to just see where I really want to plant my roots before I settle in buying a home.

I was born here in the US , But spend my whole life in Europe ‘ Stockholm Sweden. I simply moved back here because there’s no place like home! .. My Project happens to be taking me to Nigeria, Victoria Island Lagos… I am managing a building project for a new casino/hotel resort on the island. There is much new development going on there and it is an exciting time for Africa to be building some beautiful architectural structures.

I have some questions for you .. First , Tell me something about yourself that you haven’t share in your profile .. secondly , For how long now have you been Divorced , What is the dating sense like for you so far , I mean your experience on MATCH.

    Philip.

Three: appreciate your response back to me , Shows that you really have interest in corresponding with me and that is a very good thing.. You seem like a very humble and loyal woman! that i would really love to connect with. Am happy i have your attention, I want us to get to know each other better and see where this takes Us , Mean while i always hope for the best in everything i do and know the best is mine always.

I have missed emailing with you back and forth , I have been out today running errands and taking care of other things very important for my trip to Africa this Thursday. Just got in and the first thing i can think of is checking my email to see weather you have dropped me a note. My day was good but also a bit stressful… Are you home now .. maybe we can try using the Yahoo! Messenger I’M it’s very nice or better still talk on the phone.

I didn’t know it was possible one could Google themselves on line , It’s very nice still i have never tried it before .. Am new to this whole on line dating .. Am not well experienced. I have only been on MATCH for a week.

Anyway i don’t think am posted on line .. I have been involved in private contracts well if you have question to ask me , i much prefer you come straight and ask me.

My last name is Bingham. Have a wonderful evening Sandra..

    Philip.

The other email address I created is receiving almost identical emails with minor modification that may address one or two questions.

  • i have been scammed

One of my readers sent this too me a while ago. You must be extra, extra cautious when dealing with ANYONE on the Internet. One of my favorite Ronald Regan saying is “Trust but verify.” Well on the Internet you must not trust.. only verify and verify again. Be suspicious because unfortunately the bad guys have better marketing than the good guys.

“this Raven Rileys has been asking for money from me since September 2008 , i have sent her, passport money visa money plane ticket money and now she wants declartion FEE MONEY $2800 i have spoken to her on web cam but she says her names Rose Larry from accra Ghana, i found her picture today as a mojor scammer by chance and would like to report her to the Ghanian authories how do i do this? Also i have copies of her passport and visa and ID voters card in the name of Rose Larry and a declaration fee rtequest for $2800”

  • 419 the Nigerian Scam, the movie

Sorin Mihailovici is making a movie about the Nigerian scammers.
    Sorin Mihailovici

419: the Nigerian Scam is about the scam e-mails that people receive daily. The Internet is flooded with e-mails promising money-making business proposals, lottery win notifications, and fabulous inheritances. This is the story of how one man’s involvement with such an Internet scam ruined his life. Before I started shooting, I myself exchanged a few e-mails with real scammers from Nigeria and Ivory Coast. They even send me “documents” certifying all kinds of positions and deals that they have. The inclusion of this real correspondence with the scammers gave an added level of realism to my film.

    Heckle Spray

I hope the movie goes viral, goes on CNN all major news outlets so that people will be cautious about the traps set on the web’s ruthless anarchy. The price of true freedom only available in the newly discovered digital landscape.

While I don’t think an ‘eye for an eye’ type justice will come to all of the third world country online scavengers, I do believe there is hope for potential victims. My hope is in the spark of awareness that can be ignited by media like Sorin Mihailovici’s movie or this little blog. If I can help even one person NOT send a penny to an online liar, then I feel like these words I publish are worth it.

  • Nigerian Dating Scams: Peterson Johnson of Canada

I am also at fault to get involved with a Nigerian Scammer though there are some changes and improvement I think they have made in the last few days. I see there is a post here from Sept.8,2008. I am writing here on Sept 20,2008

The story basically the same parents or parent are dead. But now this man claims to be Peterson Johnson of Canada. lived in Bremuda until he was 19 and parents died in a car crash or just mother when he was 26. He claims to be an Engineer from Hamilton, Ontario. He has done some world travelling to Paris, Scotland, this is first time in Nigerian been there just three weeks. After about 4 emails he was in love. He claimed I reminded him of his mom. How sweet. He claims he is 33 or 32 years on profile it says he is 32 but he told me he is 33. Most of his emails are well spoken english but a couple have been very broken, his last for example. Which gave me a final red flag. It sounded like a complete other person the english and grammer where so poor and what he said sounded like a stocker, not like a man in love. I took some advice from some of the post above mine. To do some digging on this Peterson Johnson, I took the first sentence in one of his letters, and google it. Surprise, Surprise to find it was a letter from another scammer, but it was from a women not my sweet Peterson.

I just wanted to add my comments because this scam details are a little different than the other comments. This guy claims to be single with no kids, he is from Canada not England or the States. He is not travelling, he is already in Nigeria working on contract for an Engineering Company. I think they are learning from the emails and the communications that us who have been scammed have sent them. Though I never gave my address, phone, or were I work to my potential mate. I was still scammed into believe that this person could have been real.

So if anyone tells you any of the information above, please don’t email them anymore also don’t give out any personal information. If anything sounds familiar to you or if you want to see the pictures of Peterson that I was sent you can email me at funnieface21@yahoo.com. Below I have also am including part of the letter that I was sent an had google the first sentence from this letter on Google.

I have also enclosing below the email address of the yahoo account that I was getting emails sent to me from.

Take Care and good luck I hope this information is helpful.

    Dear,
I am young but I have experienced the joy of love and pain of hurt before. I had to walk away to save myself from walking into more than I could handle. I may be nothing more than a romantic idealist at heart; I can’t help it. But people either move me inside, deep in my soul, or they do not. You touched me with your words and made me feel safe and feel loved again.

  • Dating Scams

    dating scam Sadia Ghana
BEWARE OF DATING SITE SCAMS. There are a lot of false profiles out on the dating sites. The false ones are typically free member parasites and not usually paying members. Many of the false profiles are harmless member stealer’s. They are on there to flirt with you and try and get you to come to some other dating site. But some are trying to steal your heart to get to your money.

    ONLINE DATING SCAM TACTICS:

    Step 1) Take the Bait

You meet someone on a dating site (Adult Friend Finder, Match, okcupid, etc). This person has posted a picture of themselves and they are gorgeous!
    Their profiles says something like:

I am a caring ,loving, honest, respectful and i believe in god and real people to hop to meet meet my real love here

There profile seems perfect. They sounds sweet, loving and caring. Their picture (if they have one) looks incredible. They seem to live pretty close.

What’s really going on? More than likely it is some ugly dude from a third world country who just learned to use a computer. They found a hot picture and posted it on the dating site. They are the exact opposite of what ever they said on their profile: they are uncaring, dishonest and don’t respect anyone… not even themselves.

Step 2) The Out of Country Story

You send them a message. They reply and tell you that they’d rather talk to you on email (usually hotmail or yahoo). They then proceed to tell you that they are currently in another country (Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, England), but they have some sort of connection to the states in your local area. They’ll say they’re relatives are there or they do business their and they’d love to meet you sometime.

What’s really going on? They really are outside of whatever country you are (usually Nigeria, Ghana, West Africa – this is one of the top scams in that region).

    Step 3) Relationship Deception

What they do next is get a steady relationship with you. They will send more pictures. They will want to know more about you so they can cater to your ego. They will tell you they love you, tell you how good you look, how great you are. Basically, anything get the relationship going.

What’s really going on? They are lying to you and 20 other people on 5 or 6 different dating sites.

Step 4) A Crisis: they Need Money

There are various lies they may use to get money. They will ask for cash to buy the ticket to come visit you or they will tell you a tragedy has occurred and they need your help maybe even with a promise to pay you back.

What’s really going on? They are attempting to take your money and spend it on bullshit.

    Clues to Spot Dating Scams:

Pictures look too professional. Magazine quality photos should be a dead give away. If they send a series of pics and each one looks like a “model posed” photo shoot, be suspicious.
BAD GRAMMAR & SPELLING. They are typically not very well educated and it will sometimes come through loud the clear via very choppy English and slight stupid logic. Sometimes it is as bad as a 3rd grader (a dumb 3rd grader).
Western Africa. Be suspicious of ANYTHING from from Ghana, Mali and especially Nigeria.
Too much love, too fast. They will almost immediately start talking about “I love you”, “I miss you” – don’t be flattered… they don’t love you… trust me.

Disclaimer: Miracles do happen. Maybe you’ve just met a West African supermodel, with bad grammar, who has fallen madly in love with you in the course of two or three emails.

    Conclusion:
I’ve dealt with these scammers on ebay, email, dating sites and in chat rooms and one thing I’ve noticed is that they are actually not very smart. They are just ruthless. They take advantage of people’s trust, kindness and generosity. They are not so much predators as they are parasites that jump from host to host. They feed on the infrastructure and wealth of Western Civilization and have nothing at all to contribute to humanity but ignorance and greed. The sad thing is that these few greedy, idiots are giving ALL West Africans a bad name on the Web and these nations (particularly Ghana & Nigeria) are among the richest nations in Africa with the greatest potential of having great success in any and all endeavors. Its a real shame.

Richest African Countries 2006: GDP Per Country

    1. South Africa … $606.4 billion in international$ (up 8% from 2005)
    2. Algeria … $262.2 billion (up 8.5%)
