  • color nook android

I recently bought the Barnes & Noble Nook. Since I am constantly studying, reading and doing so much travel, I knew a tablet or some sort of e-reader would be very useful. I have a lot of pdf’s (NIST, DoD regulations, federal policies) so I needed something that would allow me to read those documents. I considered the ipad, ipad2, the Xoom and others but didn’t want to spend more than about $200. When I saw the Nook online with the latest version of Android 3.0 (honeycomb), it was love at first site. The Nook color is $250, it looks great, and most importantly it can be hacked easily. The Nook actually run on top of Android, however Barnes & Nobles puts their own bastardized reader interface over the OS. Barnes & Nobles has an application market and does allow you to read PDFs organize books, shop for discounted books and some other things. The Nook interface does not even come close to the usefulness of Android. Once you install Android, you can use the Android market (which includes the Nook App, btw).

There are two ways to install the Android over the Nook abomination:
    1) Install directly to the internal hard drive (voids the warranty)
    2) Install onto an sd micro card and boot from the card

For me the best option was to install the Android OS to the sd micro. I first installed Honeycomb but had some issues with the usability of the OS on the Nook. I decided to go for a more stable OS, Android 2.x and it works great!

The install is very easy and literally only takes a few minutes if you do everything right the first time:

Resources you need – nook color, sd card micro (sanDisk – at least 4GB), a computer (in this case a Windows system)

    1) Get the following software – WinImage, Installer Image (generic-sdcard), Nook Color CM7 build, Google Apps Pack

    2) Install WinImage

    3) Format the sd card (use FAT)

    4) Burn the Installer Image (generic-sdcard) on to the sd card using the WinImage software

    5) Copy Nook Color CM7 (cm_encore_full-XXX.zip) & Google Apps (gapps-gb-XXXX-signed) to the sd Card (do not unzip)

    6) Put the sd card in the Nook and turn it on. You will need to turn the system back on after the Installer is complete.

You are done!! Configure your Google apps. enjoy
    There are some prerequisites for

    nook android 3.0

You can do all of the steps above using Android 3.0 (honeycomb). Android 3.0 was actually the first think I tried. The organization of the OS is beautifully done, however I found some issues with the functionality of the build. The touch screen was sluggish, sometimes the browser would not respond to touch and I had trouble getting the Google Apps on the Nook. Maybe you will have better luck. I may do it when its a little more stable.

Here is a great site to implement Android 3.x on your Nook: http://www.the-ebook-reader.com/nook-color-honeycomb.html

  • What is the Nook

The Nook is an e-reader (also known as an electronic book or tablet) from Barnes & Noble. It is a computer that uses the Android operating system. It has on board internal flash memory, accepts microSD flash memory cards, rechargeable, and replaceable lithium-ion polymer batteries. The screen and connectivity depend on the type of device:

    -Nook Wifi
    -Nook Color
    -Nook Simple Touch

    Nook Review

There are many types of ebook readers. If you are wondering where the Nook ranks among its peers, you’ll find it is top 10 in many of the most respected tech sites:
6th on ZD Net Top 10 tablets
4 out of 5 stars from CNET’s review of only 5 Android based tablets deemed the best
    2nd among 5 Top e-Readers on PCWorld

The Nook is definitely not the most powerful e-reader on the market, but is arguably the best for the price you pay.

    a nook

for everyone!! So far, I love the Nook. I take it everywhere.

If you didn’t know, you can also hack

    the Nook Color

without voiding the warranty!! Basically, you put and Android image on an sd Card and boot the nook from the card. This allows you to go beyond the limited Nook app market that has just started and get full access to the Android App market on your Nook Color. The Android app market is set to become the largest in the world (2011). You can still use the Nook Color App once you are on Android. Its a Nook Reader app that has the same features as the default Nook application that the Nook Color comes with.

more on how to boot into Android on the nook color.

    nook ebooks

Nook allows you to read pdfs gives access to discounted Barnes & Nobles ebooks as well as Kindle and google ebooks. This puts literally millions of ebooks within your reach. These days I only go into book stores and libraries to see what ebooks I should get for my Nook. Publishing has changed forever.

  • google plus infiltration.. i mean invitation

I am trying to infiltrate google’s newest project!!

Google is getting into facebook’s swimlane.. again.

They tried with Google Wave and Google Buzz and now they have a new secret weapon… google+.
You have experienced their incredibly useful tools displayed

We “google” everything. Their tools are a household name as handy as any appliance in our homes. The tabs on the google page are etched in our minds: Web | Images | Video | Maps | News | Shopping .. etc

Google+ will add “YOU” to the tab. This will allow us to completely personalize and compartmentalize our contacts. One of the weakness’ of Facebook is its clumsy means sharing information. For example, when you accept a friend they are automatically able to shared all the data you put up. You can group friends into groups, but it is not transparent. Google Circles will hopefully fix that. From the horses mouth: Circles will be “The easiest way to share some things with college buddies, others with your parents, and almost nothing with your boss.”

Other tools in the YOU tab will include:
    Hangout:
Let friends know you’re free for a video hangout, any time, anywhere. Then catch up, watch YouTube, or… just hangout.

    Sparks:
A feed of just the stuff you’re really into, so when you’re free, there’s always something waiting to be watched, read, or shared.

    Huddle:
Texting is great, but not when you’re trying to get six different people to decide on a movie. Huddle turns all those different conversations into one simple group chat, so everyone gets on the same page all at once. Your thumbs will thank you.

    Instant Upload:
Taking photos is fun. Sharing photos is fun. Getting photos off your phone is pretty much the opposite of fun. With Instant Upload, your photos and videos upload themselves automatically, to a private album on Google+. All you have to do is decide who to share them with.

For more info on google Plus check them out here
    http://www.google.com/intl/en/+/demo/

I hope it does well 🙂

7/7/2011, 1am: I am in Google+. My access is very very limited and I cannot invite yet, but so far I must say LOL.. its beautiful.
Google is really doing it right. Facebook, Microsoft and others will have to follow their lead on this one. Wow!!!

  • Environmental Controls

Dealing with environment controls is the tax audit/turn & cough physical of information system assurance! It’s a necessary evil that is sometimes ignored until catastrophic failure has come and gone.

Environment controls have to do with ensuring the area surrounding the information systems is at an acceptable temperature & humidity. Its all fun and games until your critical information system is down because an air conditioning unit went out over the weekend and caused you to lose a mission essential function. This actually happened to an organization that I worked for.

Our system was operating on a location that had weekly power outages. There was a pretty good generator system designed to automatically turn on after a few seconds of loss of commercial power. Any system that was not plugged into an UPS would of course lose power during the transition. All of our mission essential functions were backed up by UPS systems, but the air conditioning unit was not. The air condition unit was plugged into commercial power so it would be rebooted every power outage.

The problem was that every time it was turned off abruptly it had to be reset to a temperature that was acceptable for the information system components of the mission essential functions. This was tolerable when employees were on duty, but not good when everyone was gone over a long holiday/weekend.

One long holiday/weekend the main power took a hit and the A/C unit was rebooted. The loss of this critical environmental control cause the room to reach over 90 degrees. The ambient temperature of the room rose quickly due to the heat coming from all the machines in such a small room. The temperature was enough to cause more than one system to go down. Luckily, all we last was on hard drive and a testing system.

Here are some other environment related equipment (and tasks) needed for most information systems:

AC Unit (with automatic temperature controls)
Information system have an optimal operating temperature. If certain equipment gets above or or below a certain temperature, they will not be able to perform as they were designed and the result can be loss of availability of data, loss of functionality and/or loss of business/mission essential functions. The way to keep the temperature with a range that is best for the system is some sort of automatic temperature controls unit or HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). The staff and/or facility managers should be capable of operating the temperature control system.

    Humidity controls
Too much moisture in the air can cause condensation on equipment which in turn can cause corrosion or electrical faults is eliminated. If humidity is too low, there can be an issue with static electric with can destroy small electronic components. Humidifier, dehumidifiers and hygrometers are tools that can be used to control or measure the humidity of an equipment room.

    UPS
Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) is designed to give power to systems long enough to allow them to be shutdown gracefully. An abrupt loss of power can destroy the moving parts with information systems (i.e. IDE, SATA and SCSI hard drives) and also cause data corruption (loss of data integrity). UPS systems also protect systems from the occasional voltage spike, surge and brown outs that can adversely affect an information system.

Fire suppress system (automatically alerts fire department)
    Regular fire inspections (fire extinguishers)

To minimize the damage and potential loss of life that occur with fires its important to have a modern fire suppression system with an method of automatically alerting the fire department. Any organization that is serious about the safety of its workers should have fire inspections by an actual fire chief (or equivalent) and ensure that fire extinguishers are ready to go.

    Water Detection & Flood Detection

For information system in facilities that are in flood zones, below sea level on any sort of area susceptible to any threat of flooding, its important to have some sort of water level sensor (aka water sensor alarm, water level control, liquid level switch, water leak detection). The idea is that a certain level of liquid in an equipment room will be detected and reported before it was able to damage critical equipment.

    Emergency Power Off Switch

Most server rooms have a large red button next to the entrance. This button is the emergency power off switch. Its purpose is the immediately shut off all power in the even of an emergency.

Like any information assurance or security controls, evironmental controls are not put in place to stop threats, only mitigate the risks associated with them.

16 Jun. 11, 17:45, Colorado Springs, A lady just had a siezure at the Citadel mall.  An employee from Ruby Tuesday and I, assisted her. We just made sure she didn’t bump her head or cause serious injury to herself.

The EMTs arrived and took over.  Hope she is ok.

What amazes me is how people were just standing around staring.  Sheeple.

This trip began with a speeding ticket! I am too embarrassed to advertise how fast I was going.. or should I say, how fast I was ALEGEDLY going, according to the Denver officer.

He informed me that he could arrest me for that speed. I am glad he didn’t. In the words of Rain Man, I am an excellent driver. But I was in a rush to make my flight. Getting pulled over didn’t help me. So here I am now at airport standing in line for 7 hours of layover in DIA.. and other airports.. Yatta!

  • DIARMF

Department of Defense Information Assurance Risk Management Framework (DIARMF) will replace the DoD’s DIACAP process. As of Mar 2011 it is still being developed. The former DoD Information Assurance Certification & Accreditation Process (DIACAP) will undergo the same change as the NIST SP 800-37, C&A guide did when it changed to the rev 1, Guide for Applying Risk Management Framework. Some of the changes from DIACAP to DIARMF will consist of:

      NIST SP 800-53 controls
Change focus from C&A to Risk Management
Definition of how to bridge between DoD systems and NIST defined system (subsystems & Platform IT for example)
DIARMF will look more like NIST 800-37 rev 1

It is unknown how DIARMF authorization packages will look. Currently, the DIACAP consist of DIACAP packages (DIP, SIP, scorecard, POA&M with artifacts) and NIST 800-37 rev 1 consists of a Security Authorization Package (System Security Plan, Security Assessment Report & POA&M). Also, the roles between the NIST Risk Management Framework and the DoD 8500 series are different. So far, the DON CIO and ASD (NII) have come up with mapping between the roles and the 800-53 controls.

The DIARMF will hopefully cover all of the gaps between the DoD C&A process and the new NIST 800-37, Risk Management Framework.
