Date.ca Nigerian Scam

I joined Date.ca and recieved a im from someone callng himself John Eric. Stating he read my profile and wanted to know if I would like to chat. So I read his profile and agreed to chat. He said he lived in Sarasota, Florida, and that he was divorced and his daughter lived in London with ex-wife who had cheated on him with a best friend. He had just moved to Florida in May. He said he was an engineer contractor. After chatting a couple of times on the date servcie he asked me to contact him on yahoo messanger. So I finally did and after a week of chatting he informed me he was going to Africa to supervise a building project for 2 week and hoped we could still continue emailing. He became very amourous very quickly stating he was falling in love with me and would like to come and see me after work was completed in Africa. When I would ask questions sometimes he would answer or he would not answer and change the subject with talk of his undying love and devotion for me. Or his computor would stop working. Suppossedly becasue of the distance. I quite enjoyed conversing with him and we seemed to click. He stated that he wanted to marry me and that he believed God was calling us together. It’s been 3 week chatting for hours together and 2 days ago he stated something bad had happened. When I enquired what it was he said he didn’t want to bother me with his problems. When I enquired more he told me he had come back to his apartment finding that someone had stolen his wallet, all his money and important papers as well as recent pictures of his daughter. He’d reported them stolen but would not be able to get them replaced for4 working days. He stated he had not eaten and didn’t know what to do. I made some suggestions on how he could possibly get some help US Embassy, go to a medical clinic, local church get some help anywhere. He said he was to proud and did not want to beg. I should not worry myself. That God would provide. The next day he said he needed to ask me a favor. He hadn and’t eaten for 2 days now had no money for his anti malaria dose and was wondering if I could help him out by sending him just a bit of money to get by till monday when he should be getting his new credit cards and he would remburse me then and was still planning to come and see me in Canada by thursday. I was starting to get mixed messages from him. He said he would book his flight on friday Canada(yet he didn’t have any credit cards to do that) that I would see him by thursday morning and promised me the world. He gave me information on how to send a western union money order and the secret questions I should answer so it was safe. And that I should put the name of his driver on the check. Red flags. I said to him why wouldn’t I put your name on the check. He stated I have to stay working at my office and it takes 2 hours to get downtown to bank. He said he trusted his driver and knew him well and I should not worry. His driver was well known and a good friend and he had his reasons to trust the guy. I finally stated to him I feel like something here is wrong and I do not feel right about doing this. He said he understood and then said he was wrong to ask me to do this and this was his problem and not to worry and asked me to forgive him and it would never happen again. He still was in love with me and wanted to marry me. I felt really confused at first and then a friend phoned and told me about this sight to read it and I’m sure it is the same guy. I will leave the address he gave me so you all can see it. His picture looks like a very handsome model type Italian. 46 years old. Name John Eric. His profile was in American singles. ( I informed staff there of this persons fraudulent behavior, they cancelled his profile). I tried to get more information so I’ve pretended to change my mind and state that I am willing to offer financial support. Telling him my banker will send a check to the USA Embassy but I need some Id from him, and a phone number or address where a driver from the US embassy can pick him up so he can recieve this check. No response yet but we’ll see what happens and if I can get info then I will report him.

His mailing address and Drivers name are:

Everyone please be careful of people who sound too good to be true, who offer you the world even before meeting you, who use alot of romantic talk right aways, who declare undying love and devotion and move at a really quick pace. Don’t be confused with this and if they ask for help financially or for help with getting a visa don’t buy into it.

online dating scam and fraud

Be careful of online dating site scams and fraud. They are loaded with false profiles that are meant to deceive you and take your money. They cast a large net to catch their victims. Dating scammers place fake profiles on scores of dating sites at once so they can play this game with many people at once.

Profile Bait.
How can you tell which profiles are fake? There are a few things you should be suspicious of:
– 1) The profile picture looks like a centerfold. If the profile picture looks like a model, be suspicious. Of course there are very beautiful REAL people out there on the dating sites, but be aware that scammers steal these types of pictures and use them to suck people in.
– 2) The person says they are on a business trip in Nigeria. Most of the date scammers (certainly not all) are from this country. Its unfortunate, but in this case profiling is very necessary. Be suspicious!
– 3) Free account. Since scammers are on several sites it would not be cost effective for them to pay for any memberships on the numerous dating sites they are on, the scammers will only use the free standard membership that most dating sites offer.

How they get close.
Once you take the “profile bait” and send them a message, they don’t waste anytime getting close to you. They’ll immediately go after your personal email address. If you have gotten this far, more than likely you will give them what they want. That is were the real deception begins.

Tell tale signs that you are in contact with a dating scammer:
– 1) I love you too quick. They will waste little time with building a relationship or finding out more about you. Before you’ve told the story of you, they will say things that are unusually affectionate for someone you just met.
– 2) Bad Grammar. Many of the online dating scammers have an elementary school level grasp of English grammar. They will have little or no regard for the rules of writing English.

They will tell you a story of who they are, where they come from in hopes of getting your interest. Then they’ll ask about you. They want to know who you are, what you do, where you are.

The photo set
They will typically seal the deal with a set of photos of the same beautiful person you saw on the profile:

Ask for money.
Once the online dating scammer feels they have you, they will begin the second phase of their deception. They will give you some reason that they need money. Reasons I have seen are:
-They need money for a ticket to come see you
-Their mother, child, grandparent is dying and needs your help
-They fell upon hard times and need a few dollars to get them through

At this point you should be terminating all communications with this person. They will not be satisfied with you purchasing the plane ticket yourself and sending the link, they will want you to wire money directly to them via Western Union using a MTCN, Money Tranfer Control Number.

With the popularity of online dating, scams and fraud are an epidemic. While I would not disagree that these people are the lowest forms of life, I would say that we (the victims) are at least partially responsible. The reason that they are able to do this over and over is that we are not giving them the same level of scrutiny we would with strangers we’ve just met in offline life. We are so absorbed in our own hopes and dreams of some perfect mate that we eat their BS right up. We are funding their ability to continue to scam people all over the world. It must stop. Do NOT give these people money.

If you are looking for real relationships online, here are some good resources on how to make it happen!

Internet Dating Scam

Dating Scammers are parasites residing in EVERY dating site. They prey on the emotional vulnerable for your money.

I originally started elamb.org for computer & Internet security issues. I found a few useful techniques on preventing and recovering from malware. After getting scammed I got interested in the helping people avoid fraud. I have found that people all over the world have the same experience I have had with these scams.

One of the biggest scams on the Internet right now are dateing scams. Scammers seem to be having great success on the dating sites and judging from what readers have submitted to this site, I believe it has to do with two primary factors:
1) Dating sites limited ability to stop scammers
2) Members of dating sites giving lots of money to scammers

Essentially, these two factors enables Internet date scams to exist and do fairly well.

The good news is that many of the major dating sites are doing better about informing their members of the date scam pandemic. Dating sites are beginning to for put up messages before they allow members to send any message to other members. Internet dating sites are also much better about discovering false profiles and shutting them down. They have begun to allow the users the ability to spot scammers and report them immediately.

The challenge is that anyone can create a false profile. Even legitimate members can create a fictitious profile and there is nothing that can stop them, however scammers can be easily identified by their practice of mass messaging hundreds of members over and over from a false profile. The success of Internet Dating scams are dependent on their ability to cast a wide net for profile phishing for the most emotionally vulnerable members of multiple dating sites.

Even with all the scammers and fraud, dating sites are still quickly becoming the best way to find a life partners. The caution that I would offer to members of dating sites is to take things slow and be VERY suspicious of anyone asking for money online also remember that most of the scammers are from Ghana, Nigeria and Russia but that is not to say they can not come from anywhere in the world.

Loce Scam

I would like to warn women to watch out for a Kelvin Wadsworth. Claims he comes from Waco, Texas and serving with US Army in Iraq as a Warrant Officer. I checked the US Army website for the details he had given me which were few and even they did not match. Said he finishing his tour of duty by end of October and had been there 7 months and would have 3 months leave. It took weeks to get photos of this alleged person in uniform, although he had posted one in civilian clothes on IM. I did my research and normal attachments to uniform not present. Said he was in a war zone and could not make any calls. Said his wife cheated on him with his best friend and he had not seen them since. Said he had a son studying law. To cut a long story short He eventually sent photos of his son at my request. My suspicions were confirmed when I saw the photos. At the back of one which had been taken in the lobby of a cinema was a poster advertising a movie. I goggled the name of this movie and discovered the connection with Ghana. I challenged him on this and that was the last I have heard from him. I have some saved messages and those photos. If you need them I will be happy to send to you. This is the 3rd scammer in a row I have ‘busted’. I am getting real sick of it. Please do not identify me by name, country is ok if you need to do that. Thank you.
