No, please do not believe these scam emails. Many times the people sending these emails aren’t even from the country they claim to be from.

  7. Lindsey on February 13th, 2008 10:06 am

I fell for that and sent them my information, everything except my social security number. I am in trouble? what can they do with that information? I don’t have great credit, or any assets in my name.

  8. elamb.security on February 13th, 2008 11:44 pm

    Lindsey,
What these people do is either attempt financial fraud (steal money from accounts), ID theft, or sell personal information to the highest bidder. The more information they have the more damage they can do. If they have your social you’ll have to stay vigilant and watch your credit like a hawk, if something suspicious pops up (like a rogue Sears account that you did open) comes up, jump on it. If you really paranoid than you could apply for a new social… but that is probably overkill because it will be a great inconvenience.

What I would do is contact Social Security and let them know what happened. Here is some other information:

    http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/money/idtheftssn/yourssn.html
    http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/
    http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/

If they have your bank account info, tell the bank, close the account and start a new one. If they’ve already taken money out you may be able to get your money back if you act quick enough.

farzana, I’d be very cautious with such claims. Especially those coming from a free email account. Typically, they are not who they say they are. They will ask for your personal information (with which a criminal can do all kinds of things).

    Consider this:
    1) If you applied for the lottery, they should already have your information.
    2) If you actually won a large some of money, they would likely call you or come to the address. The would locate you with the information you provided (if you’d actually entered the lottery).

The rule of the thumb with the Internet and email is this: - Never trust and always verify. -

This goes for information as well. Get data from several reputable sources, not just a random site.

Use Google or other Search engines: Go to Google and type in “scam [what ever you think is real]” - type in “scam britisth national lottery” “scam internation lottery” or whatever.. don’t just anything because every is just too easy to fake these days. Clicking on links from emails you don’t recognize can be fatal to your privacy and/or computer.

    Hi all,
I’m a New Zealander who just recieved this email yesterday. (now how the heck would a NZ’er purchase a British Lottery ticket when she ain’t ever been there - just goes to show they are extending their net to other countries.) I’ve noticed with most scams the contact agent (usually a celebrity name - come on ‘Brian Adam’s)will usually have a free email address such as Yahoo, Hotmail etc… and never a company or ISP email address. Alway’s google the sender or “claims officer” names, it’s usually a dead giveaway and the broken english……… Below are the two email’s i recieved to add to the already growing collection… cheers…

I am so furious! I could explode right here and now!!!!
First of all: NO ONE has the right to say that we (the ones who almost ,or actually, fall for scams like these) are lacking common sense!! Some of us actually like to believe that we got money we really need, and that the lottery actually CAN pick my adress out of several - online…

I too got an email, telling me I am a winner in the British National Lottery! I was a sceptic at first, sending back an email asking them to verify the first one. The phonenumbers had no connection…
I got a verification, sent them my names, adress, phonenumber, sex and occupation. HOW DANGEROUS IS THIS INFO???? WHAT CAN THEY GET OUT OF IT??
I son`t have a huge fortune they can get from me, and credits in my name are limited! So…??? I am wondering!! What`s the damage going to be?

I discovered the scam in that moment they ask for over 500 GBP just to post the check to me! I will not pay these money. A check with a lotterywinning shouldn`t cost ME a dime to collect! But up till this mail came, I was soo happy, I was beond this world for a short moment, believing I had WON ENOUGH TO GET OUT OF OUR FINANCIAL MESS. Who can blame me, right??…

Wish the worst for these scammers, that they get what comes to them! Jail! Fines…..

    Kari,

If you gave them bank account information than you’ll want to cancel that account immediately. What some criminal hackers, scammer and phishers do is sell peoples personal information somewhere on the Internet. The best thing you can do is monitor your credit to make sure no one is attempting to get credit under your name. In the US they have to have your Social Security and birthday to do certain things for ID theft.

  29. Kari on April 3rd, 2008 11:23 am

No, didn`t give out any birthnumber or accountnumber. BUT!: The coordinator called me on the phone; he wanted to know how I would pay for the postalfee - for them to send me the check I had to PAY! When I then told him I was NOT paying for him to send me money, this is a freud! - he HUNG UP! Just like that!

I will still follow my accountmovements and stuff - just in case!
    Kari.

Friends, dont worry after you get mail and send your particulars you will get
a series of mails from courier companies and they ask you to pay service charges for courier. Even they will give you some bank account number
say some banks which have international branches (say some icici etc)
and ask you to pay.Even some times they will answer you on phone mumber
and clarify that they have your parcel if you react in just hours after you get mail.

“What did you understand?did you get any thing?Even one?think again….”

“”"” All those are fake and they will fool you finally. No doubt at all !!!!!!”"”"”"

If you really pay them you have wait for your life time to get that parcel.Even
if you get parcel It will caontain some grass for you to eat.Im sure.

All people who read my mail I just want you to be wise. If you are students I advice you to study well and thats the only thing that can make you really rich. 35. thevigilante on May 3rd, 2008 10:36 am

i tell them all that i know what they are doing and that the more they contact me the easier it will be to track them down and kill them. maybe they lose sleep maybe not ,but to incite any fear is nice, after the pain and anguish they reek on unwitting people, i tell them i’ll make their children pay for their crimes. the net allows any one with proper binary understanding to track anyone down. all i need is an email address and i can find your ip address then you physical address then your name and then your life. May all the scammer die!

I too received an email, stating that I had won a couple of millions in the English Email Award International (never heard of that!!). In their mail they said that my winning claims have been handed over to the British Parcel Service under the head of Dr Anderson Green, Phd (never heard of that too!!) and that in order to get the claims, I would have to make some shipping payments, which I find totally ridiculous!!! This is definitely a con job. I only gave them my full name, address and home phone contact.
